John Donne Selected Poems-2
Her whom abundance melts, and her whom want betrays ;
And makes one little room an everywhere.
Her who loves loneness best, and her who masks and plays ;
Wilt thou then antedate some new-made vow ?
Let not to that self-murder added be,
All honours mimic, all wealth alchemy.
BUSY old fool, unruly Sun,
Cruel and sudden, hast thou since
Must I, who came to travel thorough you,
Teach me to hear mermaids singing,
Saucy pedantic wretch, go chide
I can love any, so she be not true.
You shall be true to them whore false to you. "
Or have you all old vices spent, and now would find out others ?
GO and catch a falling star,
When he, which can have learnd the art
Though parents grudge, and you, were met,
Wherein could this flea guilty be,
Did, till we loved ? were we not weand till then ?
Which watch not one another out of fear ;
MARK but this flea, and mark in this,
WOMANS CONSTANCY.
Or snorted we in the Seven Sleepers den ?
And said, "Alas ! some two or three
I can love her, and her, and you, and you ;
For love all love of other sights controls,
Thou, Sun, art half as happy as we,
So, if I now should utter this,
She九*九*藏*书*网 went, examined, and returnd ere long,
Or doth a fear that men are true torment you ?
To cut it, can find none.
If ever any beauty I did see,
Let maps to other, worlds on worlds have shown ;
Get with child a mandrake root,
NOW thou hast loved me one whole day,
Go tell court-huntsmen that the king will ride,
No where
Love, all alike, no season knows nor clime,
Thou knowst that this cannot be said
This bed thy center is, these walls thy sphere.
What wind
And forget the He and She ;
Yet this enjoys before it woo,
Till age snow white hairs on thee,
For he who color loves, and skin,
Thou, when thou returnst, wilt tell me,
Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone ;
Or, if they do, deride ;
If her eyes have not blinded thine,
If thou best born to strange sights,
THE SUN RISING.
Twas so ; but this, all pleasures fancies be ;
Would love but as before.
Bind but till sleep, deaths image, them unloose ?
Though use make you apt to kill me,
Shine here to us, and thou art everywhere ;
Call country ants to harvest offices ;
O we are not, be not you so ;
Poor heretics in love there be,
She heard not this till now ; and th

Will no other vice content you ?
SONG.
How little that which thou deniest me is ;
Or, as true deaths true marriages untie,
I HAVE done one braver thing
Such stuff to work upon, there is—
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead ;
To warm the world, thats done in warming us.
Others—because no more
Serves to advance an honest mind.
Shes all states, and all princes I ;
Which is, to keep that hid.
If thou findst one, let me know,
If our two loves be one, or thou and I
Will it not serve your turn to do as did your mothers ?
False, ere I come, to two, or three.
Princes do but play us ; compared to this,
Though at next door we might meet,
But that I would not lose her sight so long.
Things invisible to see,
Or that oaths made in reverential fear
Love so alike that none can slacken, none can die.
I WONDER by my troth, what thou and I
And cloisterd in these living walls of jet.
In that the worlds contracted thus ;
Will waste, as this fleas death took life from thee.
And this, alas ! is more than we would do.
Except in that drop which it suckd from thee?
And by loves sweetest part, variety, she sw九_九_藏_书_网ore,
Loves but their oldest clothes.
From profane men you hide,
Her whom the country formd, and whom the town ;
Let us possess one world ; each hath one, and is one.
Hath found, all outward loathes,
If, as I have, you also do
Whether both th Indias of spice and mine
I CAN love both fair and brown ;
Than all the Worthies did ;
Yet thou triumphst, and sayst that thou
Or say that now
Can have no way but falsehood to be true ?
Which think to stablish dangerous constancy.
Ride ten thousand days and nights,
The skill of specular stone,
And a braver thence will spring,
And true plain hearts do in the faces rest ;
Or who cleft the devils foot,
And now good-morrow to our waking souls,
THE FLEA.
Dispute, and conquer, if I would ;
Where can we find two better hemispheres
We are not just those persons which we were ?
And thou shalt hear, "All here in one bed lay."
Her who believes, and her who tries ;
And pamperd swells with one blood made of two ;
Venus heard me sigh this song ;
Let me—and do you—twenty know ;
Findst not thyself nor me the weaker now.
Our marriage bed, and marriage temple is.
Her who still weeps withhttp://www.99lib.net spongy eyes,
Look, and to-morrow late tell me,
To-morrow when thou leavest, what wilt thou say ?
Such a pilgrimage were sweet;
And find
Or, your own end to justify,
It were but madness now to impart
Grow your fixd subject, because you are true ?
Late school-boys and sour prentices,
My face in thine eye, thine in mine appears,
And yet a braver thence doth spring,
Thine age asks ease, and since thy duties be
Then you have done a braver thing
Than all the Worthies did ;
Tis true ; then learn how false fears be ;
All strange wonders that befell thee,
THE GOOD-MORROW.
Or to keep off envys stinging,
For having purposed change and falsehood, you
Must to thy motions lovers seasons run ?
Which I desired, and got, twas but a dream of thee.
Purpled thy nail in blood of innocence?
Tell me where all past years are,
For by to-morrow I may think so too.
O stay, three lives in one flea spare,
Nor hours, days, months, which are the rags of time.
Why dost thou thus,
Rob me, but bind me not, and let me go.
Yet she
Virtue in woman see,
Lives a woman true and fair.
It suckd me first, and now sucks thee,
Nothing else is ;
Ask for those king九九藏书s whom thou sawst yesterday,
And her who is dry cork, and never cries.
But he who loveliness within
Which will no faith on this bestow,
And last, till you write your letter,
THE INDIFFERENT.
And dare love that, and say so too,
And swear,
Thy beams so reverend, and strong
And in this flea our two bloods mingled be.
Yet do not, I would not go,
And if this love, though plac鑔 so,
Through windows, and through curtains, call on us ?
Why shouldst thou think ?
Without sharp north, without declining west ?
Just so much honour, when thou yieldst to me,
Of Love, and his wrath, any may forswear ?
Which I abstain to do,
Which is, to keep that hid.
This flea is you and I, and this
Will be
I could eclipse and cloud them with a wink,
THE UNDERTAKING.
Though she were true, when you met her,
And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.
Where we almost, yea, more than married are.
So lovers contracts, images of those,
Be where thou leftst them, or lie here with me.
Vain lunatic, against these scapes I could
But I have told them, Since you will be true,
Whatever dies, was not mixd equally ;
But suckd on country pleasures, childishly ?
